General Kitchen Plans

Finding the right kitchen plan for your home and kitchen work environment is an important aspect when designing a house plan or remodeling. Kitchens have become more than just a work area, they have transformed into a universal gathering place for family and friends. Keep this in mind when choosing kitchen plans.

To help decide which kitchen plans work best for your lifestyle you first need to evaluate what uses and routines occur currently in your kitchen and any new uses or routines expected for the future. If you are remodeling the kitchen, the number of walls and area of the house your kitchen is located will be a determining factor as to which plan will work best. Also, always remember to consider function before styles or trends.

There are six general kitchen plans that most designs will fall under. The first, and most basic of the six are straight kitchen plans. In these plans the cabinets, appliances and counters or work areas are all alined on one wall. This is probably best for small families or single persons. The next type of kitchen plans are U-shaped designs which are often considered the most efficient type. The work arrangement divides the cabinets, appliances and counter tops among three walls.

Peninsula kitchen plans are the third general kitchen design in which the peninsula area is used as a breakfast bar or as extra work space. Galley kitchen plans spread the cabinets, appliances and work areas along two walls that are typically designed to be parallel to each other.

The L-shaped kitchen plans are designed just as the name suggests. This kitchen plan has a reputation of being very functional and provides ample work space. The last of the six general kitchen plans is the island design. Island kitchen plans include an island, usually in the middle, that can be used as counter space, a butcher block, extra cabinet or storage area or an additional cooking space. The key to designing a well functioning island kitchen plan is to provide enough space in between the main counter areas and the island space. By doing this you are setting up a well flowing work triangle.

Most all of the sites with house plans also have individual kitchen plans. If not you can choose to use only the kitchen part of the house plans.

Although the above six are the most used kitchen plans there are other designs and each of the six can be altered to suit your lifestyle optimally. There are many sites with numerous kitchen plans, but if you cannot find any that accommodate your needs you can always have a custom designed plan. Customized plans are usually more expensive but having a kitchen exactly tailored to your needs will be beneficial. If you are not in need of anything special you may be able to find free kitchen plans at some sites. These sites allow you to print them from your computer.
